Abstract
Aim – The activity of ten antibiotics was assessed on 2,215 pneumococcal strains isolated in Normandy, in 1996 and 1997, by 20 laboratories for the Normandy regional Pneumococcal Observatory. Results – Strains highly resistant to amoxicillin and cefotaxime were rare (<2%). In contrast, during this two-year period, the number of pneumococcus resistant to cotrimoxazole (SXT, 27% to 55%) and to erythromycin (ERY, 42% to 53%) together with the number of pneumococci presenting with a decreased susceptibility to penicillin (DSPP) increased strongly, reaching levels rarely observed in other Regional Pneumococcal Observatories. Most of these resistant strains were isolated from children, but many were also isolated from adults, especially by blood culture (40% resistant to SXT, 30% to ERY, and 37% DSPP). Conclusion – Surveys involving both bacteriologists and clinicians are required to monitor and identify pneumococcal resistance in laboratories and to study the nature of resistant pneumococcal infections in adults and children.
